“Baby,” I finally find the strength to break the silence, knowing she’s been awake for a while and that her head has been spinning. I just wanted a few more moments with her tucked in my arms before I headed out because I’m not sure I’ll ever get to wake up with her in my arms again. “I need to get going. My mom needs help with something this morning, and I told her I’d be there for her.”

It’s not exactly a lie, but I could help my mom later this afternoon. But whether Kaylie will admit it or not, my girl needs time and space to think. With all that transpired last night, I know she’s a mess and hasn’t had a chance to process everything yet. To sort through her emotions and figure out who she’s going to choose. Of course, I want it to be me more than I want my next breath, but even more than that, I want Kaylie to be happy. That’s the only thing that truly matters.

Knowing exactly what she and Jake have together, I’m scared shitless that she’ll choose him. He’s been in the picture long before I ever stepped onto the scene. But even though I’ve spent less time with Kaylie, I know I love her just as much as Jake does. But the choice is hers to make. And as much as I’d love to stick around and convince her to choose me, I’d never be able to live with myself knowing I tried to manipulate her decision. Therefore, I have to leave so she can decide for herself who she needs in her life. This isn’t about love. I know with every shred of my being she loves us both. This is about who she can’t live without.

I claim her in one last scorching kiss and she begs me not to go, giving me a little pout that almost has me caving and climbing right back under the covers with her, but I hold fast to my decision. She needs to be alone to process through her feelings and decide for herself who she wants to hold her future. If I linger around, she’ll choose me just because I’m making her feel good in this horrible moment and not because I truly would have been her choice.

I lean down and place a kiss on her forehead. “I’ll always be here for you no matter what you decide. Know that, babe. I’m not going anywhere even if I can’t have you as mine.”

“You’re way too good for me, Trent Garrison.” Her pretty eyes glisten, and my heart beats double-time. Never knew I could feel this way about anyone, but I do. “I love you,” she whispers, and that’s my fucking cue. I turn before she sees my pain, not wanting guilt to sway her.

I walk out her front door and spot Jake sitting on his front porch, looking so fucked over and miserable that I can’t get in my truck.
